The Rain of God

[[R E L I G I O N]] * This has to rank right up there with the most idiotic and twisted ideas I have ever heard expressed. Courtesy of Salon’s War Room blog comes news about a South Carolina-based group calling itself Columbia Christians for Life, which in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, spit out e-mail messages proclaiming that the devastating tempest was God’s vengeance against Louisiana for hosting “10 child-murder-by-abortion centers,” and “five are in New Orleans.” This antiabortion group also pointed out what it said were stunning similarities between the satellite image of Katrina as it clobbered America’s Gulf Coast and photographs of a six-week-old human fetus. “Even the orange color of the image is reminiscent of a commonly used pro-life picture of early prenatal development,” War Room quotes the e-note as saying.

In a followup report today, War Room unearthed another contingent of far-fringers, Philadelphia-based Repent America, claiming that Katrina’s timing was not a matter of chance: God inflicted this storm upon the Crescent City just in time to cancel Southern Decadence, “an annual homosexual celebration attracting tens of thousands of people to the French Quarters [sic],” which had been scheduled to run from August 31 through September 5. Repent America director Michael Marcavage is quoted on the group’s Web site as saying, “Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city. From ‘Girls Gone Wild’ to ‘Southern Decadence,’ New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. May it never be the same.”

As I said, idiotic and twisted. And offensive, to boot. Right up there with the Baptist church members in tiny Smyrna, Tennessee, who last weekend interrupted the funerals of two National Guardsmen killed in Iraq, because they wanted to make the point--with signs and shouts of “God hates fags”--that the men’s deaths were part of divine retribution against the United States for harboring gays and lesbians.

Wow, that's almost as dumb as the "Katrina is a terrorist soldier for Allah" comment from Kuwait. I'll have to add that to my Hurricane Conspiracies list.

This line comes from V for Vendetta. I loved it as it was used in the movie and I felt it the night before last when that wild storm swept the heat out of Toronto.First the clouds and wind advanced in a solid line. The sky was evening blue, you know, that colour as turquoise deepens and blackens to navy; it lies somewhere march madness in the middle looking both crisp and deep and full of dreams, the perfect backdrop for the first glittering star of the evening. As the clouds moved overhead I went outside.
