And Leave the Party Dresses at Home

[[W A R]] * Perhaps emboldened by this week’s further proof that George W. Bush wasn’t willing to wait in 2003 for the United Nations to sanction his war on Iraq or for the discovery of any actual weapons of mass destruction, but was determined to start bombing Saddam Hussein regardless, U.S. Representative William Lacy Clay Jr. (D-Missouri) told an audience gathered in St. Louis on Monday that the prez is an “incompetent chickenhaw” who “took this country to war by choice, not because we had to fight but because he wanted a fight.” Observing that more than 2,300 U.S. troops have now perished in the Iraq conflict, Clay suggested that the American sacrifice hasn’t been shared equally, and asked why Bush’s own twin daughters, 24-year-old Barbara and Jenna, aren’t being fitted for uniforms themselves.

“If you really believe that the war that you started in Iraq is a fight to defeat terrorism and to defend our freedoms,” Clay asked Bush, “why haven’t your girls enlisted?”

Noting that during World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s sons served in the military, the congressman remarked: “That is a perfect example of the difference between a truly courageous wartime president and an incompetent chickenhawk who prefers to risk the lives of other American’s children.”
