The March of Time

[[E V E N T S]] * Today is my birthday. I won’t say which one, since I live quite happily, thank you, in denial of my inevitable mortal deterioration. I generally eschew any sort of work on my birthday, but just for fun, I decided to look up who else was born on this day of the year. As is surely true for anyone, I’m surprised to share my birthday with some notable personages, and can’t help but roll my eyes at other of the folks who will be blowing out candles and making wishes today--if they aren’t already dead. Just a few of other the people born on March 18:

François, Duke of Anjou (1555-1584)
John C. Calhoun, vice president of the United States (1782-1850)
Grover Cleveland, president of the United States (1837-1908)
Rudolf Diesel, German inventor (1858-1913)
Neville Chamberlain, British prime minister (1869-1940)
Edgar Cayce, American psychic (1877-1945)
Chiang Ching-kuo, president of the Republic of China (1910-1988)
Peter Graves, American actor (born 1926)
George Plimpton, American writer and actor (1927-2003)
John Updike, American author (born 1932)
Frederik Willem de Klerk, president of South Africa, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (born 1936)
Charley Pride, American musician (born 1938)
Bill Frisell, American jazz musician (born 1951)
Vanessa Williams, American beauty queen, actress, and singer (born 1963)
Queen Latifah, American singer and actress (born 1970)

Here’s to another year of trying to make my mark on the world.

Happy birthday, Jeff. I'm glad you're claiming your rightful place among all these notables. Next year, of course, the inevitable decline accelerates, but hey, who's counting?
