This sort of idiotic I’m-right-and-you’re-wrong thinking is just one reason why the GOP (God’s Own Party) is having trouble connecting with many Americans and find it difficult to maintain the allegiance of a numerous others. According to the Dallas Morning News, incumbent Texas Governor Rick Perry said, after attending a “God and country sermon” at which other political candidates were also present, “that he agreed with the minister that non-Christians will be condemned to hell. ‘In my faith, that’s what it says, and I’m a believer of that,’ the governor said.”
Probably the best rejoinder to that came from Independent gubernatorial candidate and author Kinky Friedman, a Jew, who observed, “He doesn’t think very differently from the Taliban, does he?” Friedman added, “Being obsessed with who’s going to heaven and who’s going to hell is a kind of pathetic waste of time.”
