The World Is Watching

After hearing that singer Lionel Richie intends to conclude today’s world-televised Michael Jackson memorial service in Los Angeles with a group rendition of the 1985 song “We Are the World,” which Ritchie and Jackson wrote to raise funds for famine relief in Africa, I decided to look up the original version.

Among the singers featured in the performance are Bruce Springsteen, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper, Huey Lewis, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, and of course Jackson himself. That video is embedded below. I have to say, it remains every bit as moving today as it was when I first saw it 24 years ago.
